DUTILLEUX Cello Concerto: Tout un monde lointain... [30']
RACHMANINOV Symphony No. 3 in A minor [42']
The rich otherworldly perfume of late-19th-century Symbolist poetry infuses two magical French masterpieces of the 20th century. Debussy's fantastical setting of Mallarmé's Prélude à l'après-midi d'un fauneannounced the arrival of musical modernity in a spellbindingly rich and sensuous reverie. Inspired by Baudelaire and a cello concerto in all but name, Dutilleux'sTout un monde lointain. is equally mysterious and voluptuous, with a lyrical solo line for Alban Gerhardt, 'one of the finest cellists around' (The Guardian). Rachmaninov's Third Symphony is a boldly romantic affair full of lush melodies, evocative folk lyricism and searing emotions.
